Latest about the Ooni of Ife

It was revealed that the remains of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, may be undergoing traditional embalming.

A reliable source at the palace revealed on Wednesday that the body of the monarch truly arrived in the palace earlier in the week, as reported in the media.

He further stated that members of the family of the monarch might have completed parking their belongings from the palace.

According to Sun news, the source revealed that the body was being kept at ‘Ilegbo’, a room, where the monarch was crowned.

The source also said, “The body arrived at Ile Oodua early this week and was received by members of Isoro. He is being kept at Ilegbo where he was crowned. The body is being preserved with traditional means.

“All the rites would be carried out while the body is being kept at Ile'gbo. The body is still there now and the formal announcement of his demise may not be made for weeks."

It will be recalled that the media reported that the Ooni died in a hospital in the United Kingdom on June 28.

He was said to have been flown out of the country but lost the battle to death five days after he was taken abroad for treatment.

However, members of the Ife Traditional Council, led by the Lowa of Ife, Oba Joseph Ijaodola, debunked the report at a press conference he addressed the following day.

The chief carried the rebuttal to Governor Rauf Aregbesola in Osogbo, where they told the governor that the monarch was alive.

They, however, held a brief meeting behind the closed-doors and the details of their discussion were not made available to journalists.
