Children's Day Disaster

This year’s Children Day celebration was marred by tragedy at Gure town in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, as four female children were killed by lightening.

The lightening at Gure, a popular ancient town and the commercial nerve centre of Baruten council, struck during a downpour between 12 midnight of Tuesday and 1a.m of yesterday.


The lightening was said to have killed all the children instantly, three of who were of the same parents. The fourth one came to pass the night with the other victims. The injured ones have been hospitalised.

Sources said the lightening broke down the wall of the house, and that the remains of the victims have been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

It was further learned that the down pour also blew off the roofing sheets of many houses in the town, rendering some residents homeless.


The number of rain disaster victims in the area was more than 200.

Woman kills son

On the same day, a woman went berserk at Otta in Ado-Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State, stabbing her three-year-old son to death.

Meanwhile, the Ogun woman, identified as Funmilayo Adeyanju, who killed her son at Ogunso area of Otta in Ado-Odo/Otta Local Government Area of the state, allegedly stabbed her child, Emmanuel, several times on the head and other parts of the body with a knife.

It was learnt that the child was a product of an alleged incestuous relationship between the woman and her own biological father.

Also disclosed that the woman, who was immediately arrested by the police, put up some strange behaviours when questioned about the alleged crime.

While the corpse of the child has been taken to the mortuary.

The PPRO said: “The police have been to the scene to recover the body of the child. The woman has been acting strangely like a person who is of unsound mind. The police would carry out proper investigation.


“The police will work on the state of mind of the woman and will have to seek the help of an expert to know her mental state.”
