Some of the richest actors in the world are not who you’d think.
In a list published by Wealth-X, the planet’s richest actor is Jerry Seinfeld, with a personal fortune of £486 million.
His wealth mainly comes from the ‘Seinfeld’ sitcom, which (as of 2013) has earned more than £2 billion in syndication fees since it ended in 1998.
The comedian takes a major cut of this thanks to a profit-sharing deal with Warner Bros., who own the rights to the show.
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan – who’s made way more cash than Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks – an estimated £355 million comes in at second place.
Khan, 48, is a veteran of more 50 Hindi films and has won eight prestigious Filmfare Best Actor Awards (considered the Oscars of Bollywood).
Despite his relative anonymity in the west, he may well be the world’s biggest film star with more than a billion fans, according to some estimates.
Tom Cruise is third on the list, with £284 million in the bank.
Next up is Tyler Perry, an actor, producer and director of TV shows and films aimed at African-American audiences, including the Madea franchise and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, he’s made £266 million.
Perry’s wealth is based on retaining full ownership of his projects through his production company, and by cornering this underserved and lucrative niche in the American entertainment industry.
Wealth-X, who created the list, describe themselves as “the definitive source of intelligence on the ultra wealthy with the world’s largest collection of curated research on UHNW individuals, defined as those with assets of US$30 millions and above”.
